Prerequisites :

 

Students must have had basic keyboarding skills prior to entering this course.  

Description :

 

The study and use of primary technology applications; including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation skills. Students will also explore other applications such as email, Internet, online communities, and multimedia tools to enhance project development and communication skills with technology. These skills will be used in all other subjects as part of the district's Technology Integration plan. Technology lessons will be aligned with certain topics of study from other core subject areas, so that students learn to identify proper and efficient use of technology for projects in all subject areas.  

Learning Objectives:

 

  • Using Microsoft Word, students will develop page layout, document design, and proper letter formatting skills to produce word processing documents, such as formal letters, essays, outlines, and journals.
  • Using Microsoft Excel, students insert collected data into a spreadsheet , analyze the data, create charts and graphs, and apply calculating functionality to the data to create data-driven content for projects such as Science Fair projects, solving math problems, or inserting data charts into other presentations.
  • Using Appleworks Database, students will learn to define data entry fields, create entry forms, define data queries, and design attractive, analytical reports of specific data to generating content for projects and papers in various core subjects.
  • Using Microsoft PowerPoint, students will organize information, images, sounds, and animations into outline, then slide format, and insert Excel charts, Database reports, and original text from other applications to create attractive visual presentation tools on a specific topic.
  • Using the PISD Groupwise email application, students will learn proper use and ettiquette of online communication, while implementing the program for correspondance with their teachers and classmates. Students will learn to appropriately correspond with or make requests to professionals or students outside the district to gather information and content for projects.
  • Using the Internet, students will learn search techniques for efficient and effective online research, as well as how to analyze the integrity of a site's content before using it for their projects.

Evaluation:

 

Assessment will be evaluated by the completion of tutorials, guided projects, independent projects, and tests.
